Life Lately: Hello San Diego
I was asked last minute to speak on a panel at a conference in San Diego last week. As you can tell, it was terrible. (Kidding obviously)
I had never been to Southern California so I was really excited. We stayed at The Grand Del Mar. I think it’s safe to say if it wasn’t for my job I would never have the opportunity to stay at this luxury hotel. “Luxury” is just not a category we consider when booking a trip.
I practiced my speech by the pool when I got there with a skinny coconut colada and even ordered a shrimp Cesar salad. Have you ever felt so blessed that you feel guilty? I felt terrible that Nick and Austin couldn’t join me.
This was the garden (above) and below is one of the terraces. It was like a scene out of Mid Summers Night Dream.
I went for a run one morning before the conference started. I asked the doormen if there was a path I could take. They said there was one right outside the resort property. It was about a mile down the road. They kept insisting that they should drive me there. That defeats the purpose a bit so I said no thank you … but continued to giggle at the thought of me stepping out of the resorts Benz while they dabbed the sweat off my brow before I took off for a run. So funny.
I treated myself to a “Replenish Body Wrap” and a mini facial at their spa as well. This was the view of their salt water mineral hot tub and the steam room and sauna.
See. Totally spoiled.
They come in and get your room ready for bedtime every night. They put rose petals on my bed and in the enormous bathtub. There was also a chocolate covered oreo in front of my pillow as well.
My diet was a bit off for the two days I was there but I tried not to worry about it and just enjoy myself.
You guys … I slept for 8 hours straight the first night. It’s been two years maybe longer since that has happened.
I was really nervous but everyone said I did a great job on my speech. Phew. I was happy to get that part over with.
I missed this little guy so much. I think he took my two nights away pretty hard. At school they said he seemed stressed and was even pushing the other kids in his classroom. That’s not like Austin at all.
It was so good to see him and squeeze him and kiss him repeatedly when I got back.
SLEEP UPDATE: He is still not sleeping in the pirate ship. He loves to play in it. He makes us all sit in it “Mommy sit, Daddy sit” and then says he is driving us to Chucky Cheese and spins the steering wheel.
But no sleep.
He sleeps on the floor next to it until about 1am and then wakes up and one of us will sleep in there with him on the floor or bring him in our bed.
I was greeted by cherry blossoms when I pulled up from the airport. This is my street. I love our tunnel of pink and white and savor them for the few short weeks they are in bloom.
Okay, back to reality. P.S. It’s almost Cinco de Mayo. I’ve got a jello shot recipe coming up and some more about the book soon.
